P.Oxy. 10 1311

This short note does not make it clear whether the payment is intended for the presbyter personally, or as a donation to the saint's martyr shrine.

The text runs as follows:

εἰς τὸ ἔλαιον τοῦ ἀποτακτῆρ(ος(?)) Ἀνιανός
πρ(εσβυτέρου) μαρτυρ(ίου) Ἄπα Ἰούστου

'For the oil of … Anianos, presbyter of the martyr shrine (
martyrion) of Apa Ioustos.'

The document is housed at Newton Centre, Andover Newton Theological School, P. Oxy. 1311, and has been dated on palaeographical grounds.


Discussion

For this martyrion of Ioustos, see also E02232. The fact that Ioustos had a martyrion at Oxyrrhynchos suggests he was a local martyr (though martyria are also documented away from the principal place of burial of a saint).
