Fragment of a Latin epitaph probably mentioning *Callixtus (bishop and martyr of Rome, S00145) as the eponym of the cemetery. Found in the lower part of the cemetery of Callixtus, via Appia, Rome. Probably 4th c.

Fragment of a marble plaque. Preserved dimensions: H. 0.24 m; W. 0.55 m; Th. 0.065 m. Letter height 0.05 m.

First recorded by Antonio Ferrua in
cubiculum Ee of the Cemetery of Callixtus. Published by Ferrua in 1964.

Discussion

The inscription probably described the location of the tomb as 'in the Cemetry of Callixtus.' Cf. E04729: conpa[ra]bit sibi arco[so]lium in Callisti / 'he prepared the tomb (arcosolium) for himself in the Cemetery of Callistus.'

Dating: Antonio Felle (in EDB) dates the inscription to the 4th c.
