The inscription is on a silver gilded cross with a suspension hook, a part of the so-called treasure of Torredonjimeno (southern Spain), a group of silver and gold objects dated to the seventh century. The cross was probably a part of a votive crown, similar to those which belong to the famous treasure of Guarrazar (see E07461, E07464).

Dimensions of the cross: 6,5 cm x 6,8 cm. The fragments of the cross are now in Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Córdoba and Museo de Arquelogia de Cataluña.

Discussion

The treasure was found in Torredonjimeno, near Jaen in southern Hispania (80 km east from Cordoba) in 1926. Its provenance has been debated. Because the pieces have been dedicated to the Sevillan martyrs, some scholars argued that the treasure came from the basilica of Justa and Rufina in Seville. Supposedly, it ended up in realtively distant Torredonjimeno having been evacuated during the 8th-century Arabic invasion. However, there is no evidence to support this theory and the treasure might come from a local church dedicated to those saints, possibly in the episcopal city of Tucci (Castillo Maldonado 2003: 61-62).
