Vita Floridi (BHL 3062)

There is a Life of Floridus, written in Arezzo in 1077/1087 by a certain deacon Arnulphus. In the 1988 publication of this text, the editors argue that Arnulphus added a prologue and some concluding chapters, but otherwise reproduced substantially unaltered a much earlier text, which they attribute to the circle of Gregory the Great at the very beginning of the seventh century (Haussig, Maaz and Spitzbart 1988).

We have not examined this Life, but there is a useful summary of its content in Pietri and Pietri 1999.

Discussion

Floridus is also known from the Dialogues of Gregory the Great, but there he appears as a source for some of Gregory's information, not as a 'saint' with miracle-working powers.

Città di Castello (ancient Tifernum Tiberinum) is in central Italy, in Umbria to the west of Arezzo.
