Julian of Toledo, Praise of Ildefonsus

Expleto que octauo decimo praedicti principis anno, sequenti die, decimo kalendarum februariarum, domicilio carnis exuitur atque in ecclesia beatae Leocadiae tumulatur ad pedes sui decessoris, cum quo creditur aeterno frui receptaculo claritatis.

'And when the eighteenth year of the reign of the said king was over, the next day, the tenth day before the Kalends of February, he lays aside the house of his body, and is buried in the church of the blessed Leocadia at the feet of his predecessor, with whom, it is believed, he enjoys the eternal refuge of light.'

Source

Julian was a cleric from Toledo who was educated in the cathedral school during the episcopate of Eugenius II (647-657). In 680 he succeeded Quiricus in the episcopal see of Toledo and was bishop until his death in 690. During his episcopate he presided over four general councils in Toledo (12th to 15th) and was responsible for efforts to unify the liturgy in Hispania. He left behind theological and exegetical works and was possibly the author of some liturgical texts (prayers, hymns). The Praise of Ildefonsus is a short text that Julian appended to Ildefonsus' On Illustrious Men, possibly imitating the Register of the Books of St. Isidore by Braulio of Zaragoza. It contains a sketch of Ildefonsus' life, the listing of his works and this brief notice of his death and burial. On the life and works of Julian, see Andres Sanz et al. 2010, 155-172, with further bibliography.

Discussion

The passage refers to the burial of Ildefonsus in the church of Leocadia, an important Toledan church outside the city walls (see the discussion in E03013), which was one of the meeting places of the general councils held in Toledo (the 4th Council in 633, E03013; the 5th in 636, E03083; the 6th in 638 E03084; the 11th in 676, E07427; and the 17th in 694, E07487). It is noticeable that Julian places more emphasis on the fact that Ildefonsus was buried by Eugenius II of Toledo, his predecessor, and not ad sanctos in the basilica of the martyr.
