The Cult of Saints in Late Antiquity

from its origins to circa AD 700, across the entire Christian world

Hymn to *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, S00848) for his feast day. Based on episodes told in Eugippius' Life of Severinus (E02347), it praises the saint for the miracles he performed, the help he gave to people oppressed by war, and his writing of a monastic rule. Written in Latin, presumably in Naples, at an uncertain date, possibly late antique.

This anonymous hymn is transmitted in a number of manuscripts of the Life of Severinus by Eugippius (E02347), the earliest being of 10th century; see Knöll (1886), xiii.

Discussion

The hymn is of uncertain date: it was clearly composed for the feast day of Severinus, and was presumably produced for celebrations in the city of Naples.
