E01443The short Life of *Honorius (bishop of Rome, ob. 638, S01459) in the Liber Pontificalis, written in Latin in Rome soon after his death, lists his construction of, and offerings to, the churches of many saints in Rome and its region.
E02347Eugippius' Life of *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, ob. c. 482, S00848) narrates the saint's life in Noricum (on the upper Danube), where he helps the locals in their dealings with invading barbarians, performs miracles and founds a monastery; his death; and the transfer of his relics to Castellum Lucullanum near Naples where a new monastery is founded. Written in Latin at Lucullanum in 511, by Eugippius, abbot of the monastery.
E02348Ennodius of Pavia writes the Life of *Antonius (monk of northern Italy and Lérins, S01208), ostensibly at the request of abbot Leontius. It narrates Antonius' life, emphasising his early extreme ascetic endeavours, before finally choosing cenobitism as the best form of monasticism, and entering the community of Lérins (southern France), where he becomes a leading figure and eventually dies. Written in Latin, probably in Pavia (northern Italy) between 506 and 521.
E02786Letter from Eugippius to the Roman deacon Paschasius, introducing the former's Life of *Severinus (for which see E02347). Eugippius tells how he decided to record Severinus’ miracles, after reading an unnamed layman's Life of *Bassus (monk of mons Titas near Rimini, in north-east Italy, S01329); Eugippius asks Paschasius to use his Life to write a better account of Severinus, and refers to Severinus’ miracles at his shrine at Castellum Lucullanum. Written in Latin at Castellum Lucullanum (near Naples, southern Italy), in 511.
E02787Letter from the deacon Paschasius of Rome to the abbot Eugippius of Lucullanum (near Naples), acknowledging receipt of the Life of Severinus (see E02347) and its accompanying letter (E02786), and underlining the significance of putting the deeds of saints into writing. Written in Latin in Rome, in 511.
E02789Hymn to *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, S00848) for his feast day. Based on episodes told in Eugippius' Life of Severinus (E02347), it praises the saint for the miracles he performed, the help he gave to people oppressed by war, and his writing of a monastic rule. Written in Latin, presumably in Naples, at an uncertain date, possibly late antique.
E02838In Eugippius' Life of *Severinus (hermit and monk in Noricum, ob. 482, S00848), the saint obtains relics of *Gervasius and Protasius (brothers and martyrs of Milan, S00313), and adds them to relics of other (unnamed) martyrs in his monastery at Favianis (on the upper Danube), between around 454 and 482. Written in Latin near Naples (southern Italy) in 511.
E04606The 6th/7th c. recension of the Latin Martyrologium Hieronymianum, as transmitted in 8th c. manuscripts, records the feasts of a number of saints on 11 January.
E06338Gregory the Great in two papal letters (Register 3.1 and 10.7), of 592 and 600, mentions the monastery dedicated to *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, ob. 482, S00848) in the castrum Lucullanum outside Naples (southern Italy). Written in Latin in Rome.
E06340Gregory the Great in a papal letter (Register 3.19) of 593, to Petrus, sub-deacon and papal agent in Campania (southern Italy), requests relics of *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, S00848) for the purpose of the rededication of an Arian church in Rome. Written in Latin in Rome.
E06403Gregory the Great in two papal letters (Register 9.181 and 182) of 599, first authorises the consecration of an oratory in the diocese of Tyndari (Sicily) dedicated to *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, S00848) and *Iuliana (martyr of Nicomedia, buried at Pozzuoli/Cumae, S01162); and, secondly, requests the bishop of Naples, of supply contact relics (sanctuaria) of these saints for this oratory. Written in Latin in Rome.
E06419Gregory the Great in a papal letter (Register 11.19) of 601, to Pascasius, bishop of Naples, asks that he obtain contact relics (sanctuaria) of *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, S00848) for a man dedicating an oratory to the saint, in an unspecified location. Written in Latin in Rome.
E08126The anonymous author of the Latin Theodoriciana (the so-called Anonymus Valesianus pars posterior) quotes the prophecy of *Severinus (hermit and monk of Noricum, ob. c. 482, S00848) concerning Odoacar from Eugippius' Life of *Severinus (for which see E02347). Written probably in Ravenna (northern Italy), mid-6th century.
E0831535 relic labels at Sens (northern Gaul), datable by their script to the 7th or 8th c., for relics of a great diversity of saints. Written in Latin, perhaps at Sens, or at an earlier stage in their transmission.
