In the first edition he is described as a 'confessor', in the second as a 'martyr'.
E02515The Latin Martyrdom of *Susanna (virgin and martyr of Rome, S00892) narrates Susanna’s resistance, with the help of her father Gabinius and her uncle *Gaius (bishop of Rome, S00661), to plans to marry her to Diocletian’s adoptive son Maximian; the conversions and martyrdom of her relatives *Claudius, Praepedigna, Alexander, Cutia, and Maximus (martyrs of Rome, S01440); Susanna’s martyrdom in Gaius’ house, her burial in the cemetery of Alexander. Commemorative services are celebrated in Gaius’ house at the place called ad duas domos. Written presumably in Rome at the titulus Gai, between c. 450 and the 8th c., perhaps before 550.
E04729Latin epitaph for a certain Iovina, saying that she was buried ad domnum Gaium, perhaps in proximity of the tomb of *Gaius (bishop and martyr of Rome, S00661), also mentioning *Callixtus (bishop and martyr of Rome, S00145) as the eponym of the cemetery. Found in the lower part of the cemetery of Callixtus, on the via Appia outside Rome. Probably second half of the 4th c.
E04739Very fragmentary Greek inscription identified as the epitaph for *Gaius (bishop and martyr of Rome, S00661), recording the day of his deposition, and naming him a bishop but not a martyr. The plaque bears traces of visitors’ graffiti. Found in the lower part of the Cemetery of Callixtus, via Appia, Rome. Probably 296.
