This exemption document is dated 11 June 628. It survives in a copy dating from the 9th/10th century (Cipolla 1918, 100).Discussion
This document placed Bobbio directly under the jurisdiction of the pope, and exempted it from the power of any other bishop. According to Jonas of Bobbio it was sought by the abbot, Bertulf, in order to thwart attempts by Bobbio's local bishop to gain control of the monastery. Jonas travelled to Rome with Bertulf to obtain the exemption, and describes the journey in his Life of Columbanus (2.23; O'Hara and Wood, 2017, pp.229-30).Bibliography
