'In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ...
... of the saints that is...
... of Vincentius (?) and Theodore (?)...
... 15th day before the Kalends of December [17 November]'
Text: Y. Duval 1982, no. 19.
Translation: Stanisław Adamiak.
Source
A fragment of white marble, broken on all sides. What remains measures 30 x 28 cm. The preserved fragment of text is in five lines, the letters 4 to 4.5 cm in height. In 1970 it was in the store-rooms of the excavations at Dougga.
The letter forms suggest a date in the 5th century, or even earlier.
Discussion
The sense of the inscription cannot be reconstructed with confidence. But, with the names of the saints in the genitive, it may refer to a deposition of relics, or the dedication of the building.Probably the inscription honours not saints of Dougga (such as the anonymous martyrs, S02807), but rather saints from overseas, as the names of two eminent saints would fit the surviving letters well: Vincentius, the deacon and martyr of Spain, and Theodore, the soldier and martyr of Asia Minor.
