The Cult of Saints in Late Antiquity

from its origins to circa AD 700, across the entire Christian world

A charter issued by the 'illustrious man' Wademer and his wife Ercamberta records grants of property previously made to the monastic church dedicated to *Vincent (deacon and martyr of Zaragoza and Valencia, S00290) and *Germanus (bishop of Paris, ob. 576, S1166) in Paris, which remain in the possession of the pair until their deaths; whereafter they will revert to the church, with a further annual monetary gift on Germanus' feast day. Written in Latin, probably at Pressagny (northern Gaul), 20 August 682.

'To the holy lord in Christ, the venerable father Abbot Sigefrid, and all the community at the monastery of Saint Vincent and Saint Germanus, where that same precious lord rests in body, which is constructed under the stronghold of the city of Paris. And so I, the illustrious man Wademer, and his illustrious wife Ercamberta ... <

And after both of us have died, all this improved property, together with whatever else might be found there, ought to be received by you and your successors at your monastery of Saint Vincent and Saint Germanus; and neither we, nor any of our heirs, nor bishops, shall do otherwise; and we urge that a census of 30 solidi of silver is to be given annually, on the feast of Saint Germanus, that is the 5 Kalends of June (28 May)... Enacted at the public villa of Pressagny, 20 August, in the tenth year of the reign of the most glorious King Theuderic (III)...'

Discussion

This Parisian 'monastery'/'house of Saint Vincent and Saint Germanus' is better known as the later Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

This is one of two extant charters issued by Wademer and Ercamberta: see also E08406 (issued just under a decade later and also concerning this cult site of Vincent and Germanus as a beneficiary, although there it is referred to as a 'basilica' rather than 'monastery').
