The Cult of Saints in Late Antiquity

from its origins to circa AD 700, across the entire Christian world

A charter issued by Wademer and his wife Ercamberta grants properties to churches dedicated to diverse saints in Paris and elsewhere in northern Gaul, including one dedicated to *Martin (ascetic and bishop of Tours, S00050) at Précy, where they wish to be buried. Written in Latin, probably at Chambly (northern Gaul), 690/91.

This charter survives as an original parchment manuscript (412 x 322 mm), now Paris, Archives nationales, K 3 n. 2/2.

Discussion

Eight of the charter's beneficiaries with named saints cults are identified in Atsma and Vezin's edition as (1) 'probably' the cathedral of Paris, here described as dedicated to Stephen; (2) 'probably' Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, Paris; (3) Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris; (4) Saint-Christophe de Paris; (5) Saint-Denis; (6) Saint-Wandrille; (7) Saint-Pierre de Jumièges; and (8) Saint-Martin de Précy. Two further sites are unidentifiable: one whose saint's name is missing from the extant manuscript, and another dedicated to an uncertain Desiderius.

This is one of two extant charters issued by the 'illustrious'
Wademer and Ercamberta: see also E08407. In terms of its content and apparent purpose, this charter - the later of the two texts - resembles a will, although it is strictly speaking a donation document.
