E00959Optatus, bishop of Milevis (Numidia, central North Africa), in his polemical treatise Against Parmenianus, states that the Donatists venerate *Marculus (Donatist bishop and martyr, ob. 347, S00618) and *Donatus (probably Donatist bishop of Carthage, ob. c. 355, S00619) as martyrs, and swear by them. Written in Latin, probably in Milevis, 364/c. 384.
E05033The 6th/7th c. recension of the Latin Martyrologium Hieronymianum, as transmitted in 8th c. manuscripts, records the feasts of a number of saints on 27 November.
E06329The Latin Martyrdom of *Marculus (Donatist bishop and martyr of Numidia, ob. 347, S00618) recounts how, in a persecution instigated by the emperor Constans, Marculus is arrested, tortured, dragged through cities of Numidia (central North Africa), and eventually cast to his death down a precipice; his body is miraculously recovered by the faithful. Written in central North Africa, probably shortly after the events described.
