The Sixteenth Council of Toledo gathered on 25 April 693 during the reign of King Egica and was presided over by Bishop Felix of Toledo. The assembly gathered in the aftermath of the rebellion against Egica led by the former bishop of Toledo, Sisebert. Sisebert was brought in front of the council and sentenced to demotion and excommunication. Several canons of the council refer to the crime of rebellion and impose various punishments on the rebels. See Thompson 1969: 244.The council gathered in the church of the Apostles, called the pretorian church, just as the Eighth Council in 653 (E03136), the Twelfth in 681(E07462), the Thirteenth in 683 (E07482), and the Fifteenth in 688 (E07485).
