ID | Title | E01701 | The short Life of *Sergius (bishop of Rome, ob. 701, S00897) in the Liber Pontificalis, written in Latin in Rome soon after his death, mentions various places in Rome dedicated to saints: the titular church of *Susanna (martyr of Rome, S00892); the oratory of *Silvester (bishop of Rome, S00397) at the Lateran palace; the oratory of *Caesarius (martyr of Terracina, S00893) within the imperial palace; and the city-gate of *Peter (the Apostle, S00036); it also records Sergius' burial at St. Peter's on 8 September. | E02089 | The Latin Martyrdom of *Caesarius (martyr of Terracina, S00893) is written in two main versions, BHL 1511 and BHL 1515. The shorter version, BHL 1515, is a sequel to the Martyrdom of *Nereus and Achilleus (E02033) and presumably written in Rome during Late Antiquity. It narrates that Caesarius, who refuses to sacrifice, is thrown into the sea to drown; his body is cast up and buried near Terracina. The longer version, BHL 1511, presumably written in Terracina (southern Italy), also during Late Antiquity, narrates the same and other events preceding and following Caesarius’ martyrdom in more detail and with reference to the local topography of Terracina, and adding companion martyrs, a priest Julianus, a monk Eusebius and a priest Felix. Only the longer version includes feast dates. | E05664 | Bede, in his Martyrology, records the feast on 1 November of *Caesarius and Iulianus (martyrs of Terracina, S00893). Written in Latin at Wearmouth-Jarrow (north-east Britain), 725/731. | E05673 | Bede, in his Martyrology, records the feast on 5 November in Terracina (southern Italy) of *Felix and Eusebius (martyrs of Terracina, companions of Caesarius and Julianus, S00893). Written in Latin at Wearmouth-Jarrow (north-east Britain), 725/731. | E06448 | A contemporary account, recorded in Gregory the Great's Register (Appendix 8), tells how the image of the new emperor Phocas and his wife Leontia was received in Rome in 603, acclaimed at the Lateran by the clergy and Senate, and then placed by Gregory in the oratory dedicated to *Caesarius (martyr of Terracina, S00893) in the palace on the Palatine Hill. Written in Latin in Rome. |
