ID | Title | E02171 | Gregory of Tours, in his Histories (5.37), records the death in 580 of *Martin, (bishop of Braga, S01176) in Galicia (north-west Hispania), and the verses he wrote over the portal of a church of *Martin (ascetic and bishop of Tours, ob. 397, S00050). Written in Latin in Tours (north-west Gaul), 580/594. | E02847 | Gregory of Tours, in his Miracles of Martin (1.11), recounts how Chararic, a king of Galicia (north-west Hispania), built a church to *Martin (ascetic and bishop of Tours, ob. 397, S00050), and converted from Arianism when his servants brought relics of Martin (a silk cloth placed on his tomb in Tours) to Galicia, in 550/559, most probably in 556. These relics cured the king's sick son and protect Galicia from leprosy; *Martin (bishop of Braga, ob. 580 AD, S01176) arrived in Galicia on the very same day as them. Written in Latin in Tours (north-west Gaul), 573/576. | E06545 | A wandering monk named Mauricius writes to a Spanish bishop named Agapius defending his wandering lifestyle, and declares his intention of visiting the shrines of 'the holy martyrs of God Martin and Vincent', a reference to *Vincent (deacon of Zaragoza and martyr of Valencia, S00290), and probably to *Martin (ascetic and bishop of Tours, ob. 397, S00050), but just possibly to *Martin (bishop of Braga, ob. 580, S01176). Letter written in Latin in Hispania, early 7th c. |
