Written in Latin in Tours (north-west Gaul), 580/594.
E00801Prudentius, in his poem (Crowns of the Martyrs IV) on the *Eighteen Martyrs of Zaragoza (north-eastern Hispania, S00485), lists the saintly patrons of various places in Hispania, Gaul and North Africa, who will be presented by their cities at the Last Judgement, and singles out Zaragoza for special praise, because of the number of its martyrs. Written in Latin in Calahorra (northern Hispania), c. 400.
E01798Valerius, hermit of Bierzo (north-west Hispania), in his Replicatio sermonum, mentions the construction of a basilica in Bierzo, dedicated to a martyr Felix (probably the martyr of Gerona, S00408), on the mountain in which a pagan shrine stood before; all in Valerius' lifetime. Written in Latin, near the end of the 7th century.
E02332Gregory of Tours, in his Histories (9.6), recounts how a false holy man, claiming to have relics from Hispania of *Vincent (deacon of Zaragoza and martyr of Valencia, S00290) and *Felix (martyr of Gerona, S00408), had appeared in Tours in around 580. After behaving with extreme arrogance towards Gregory, he left for Paris, where he attracted a following until imprisoned by Bishop Ragnemod, who destroyed his false relics. Escaping, he entered the Parisian church of *Julian (martyr of Brioude, S00035). Gregory mentions the existence of other such false saints, who attracted followings. Written in Latin in Tours (north-west Gaul), 587/594.
